When you visit Dr. Crapo & Associates for a dental exam, your dentist will thoroughly examine your mouth and check for problems such as tooth decay (cavities), periodontal disease (e.g. gingivitis), infections, cysts, bone loss, and oral cancer.

As well as visually examining your teeth and gums, your dentist might use X-Rays to screen your bones and the roots of your teeth for outwardly invisible issues. Exams are also the perfect occasion to make sure that any restorations, such as bridges, dental implants, or veneers, are in good condition.

Regular checkups paired with proper oral hygiene are the best way to prevent dental problems down the road.

A comprehensive dental exam is a great way to stay on top of your oral health. Here’s a breakdown of what you can expect during your visit to Dr. Crapo & Associates:

  • Medical History Review: Before the exam begins, our team will review your medical history to identify any health conditions, medications or habits that may impact your oral health. This information is crucial in providing personalized dental care.

  • X-Rays: These images are an essential part of any dental exam, as they help your dentist detect problems such as cavities, infections, bone loss and impacted teeth that may not be visible during a visual examination. If you’ve been cavity-free for a couple of years and don’t have any dental concerns, you may not need X-Rays for every dental exam.

  • Oral Cancer Screening: The dentist will conduct a screening by visually examining your mouth, tongue, throat and neck for sores and irregular or discoloured tissue. They may also feel for lumps.

  • TMJ Assessment: To check for signs of temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorder, the dentist may apply a bit of pressure to your jaw to test for tenderness and pain. They will also look inside your mouth for signs of teeth grinding, clenching and alignment issues.

  • Gum Disease Evaluation: The dentist or one of our hygienists will check for signs of gum disease, such as bleeding, and inflammation or recession. They'll do so with a tiny ruler called a "periodontal probe" to measure where your gums attach to your teeth. Healthy gums attach to teeth just below the edge of the gum. If your gums attach to your teeth below this point, it's a sign of gum disease.

  • Plaque and Tartar Removal: One of our dental hygienists will use various fine-tipped metal tools to remove plaque and tartar from above and below the gum line. This technique is called scaling. Removing plaque and tartar is important to prevent cavities, gum disease and bad breath.

  • Teeth Cleaning: After scaling your teeth, the hygienist will clean and polish your pearly whites to remove surface stains and improve their appearance. This step will leave your teeth looking their best.

Finally, the dentist will give your cleaned teeth one last look to identify issues such as cavities, cracks or chips, and recommend any necessary treatment. They may also provide some care tips.

Before you leave your dental check-up, the receptionist will schedule your next appointment to ensure optimal oral health.
