I’m As Good Once As I Ever Was
Q: I’ve had a full life and in my mid-eighties, I’m still full of life. Aches and pains, I have only a few. Friends and family make up my days. I have seen my fair share of challenges personally and poxily. As the song says, I’m “not as good as I once was but I’m as good once as I ever was.” Having said all that, teeth have always been a concern and I’ve spent a lot of time and money in the dental chair. Through my ups and downs, I’ve been good and I’ve been bad as far as care of my teeth are concerned. I guess that’s pretty normal. When I’ve had ten plates spinning at once, I haven’t taken care of my teeth. When life slowed to a dull roar, I did better. Some visits, the hygienist said good job, other times – well, I knew what was coming – bad girl, pick up that toothbrush and floss-em or loss-em (lose-em, haha!) Well, I’m at that point where the plates have been spinning and my pearls just haven’t had their proper care. I saw the dentist and he essentially said these teeth are ready for the bone yard. Well sir, I’m not! So, this denture suggestion didn’t make it to first base. What do I do? I’ve heard implants are the ticket, today. What do you say? And by the way, can I do this fast? I may not have many years to go but I want to go, go, go every one of them.
A: With your obvious love of life, you have many options. If your teeth are failing because of decay but you have lots of good bone, you can have implants and teeth to replace every one that must come out. If all are lost, there are options that can give you anchored and secure teeth from day one. Teeth in a day, or same day teeth, mean that on the day your badly decayed teeth come out, implants, which are made of titanium, are placed in the remaining tooth sockets and are then connected to teeth made specifically for you. You wear these temporary teeth that look like your own teeth when they were new and strong, for three or four months, then you can have a number of options of teeth that are similar but stronger than the “instant teeth” or you can have teeth made for every implant. It’s up to you and your doctor on the approach you’ll take. Go for it, you’ll be happy you did.
